MCA Deck Officer Certificates (Officer of the watch (OOW), Chief Mate and Master)

MCA Officer of the Watch, commonly abbreviated to OOW, MCA Chief Mate and MCA Master Certificates are gained with a combination of pre-entry requirements, training courses, assessments and sea service.

Each Certificate of Competence will have a gross tonnage (GT) rating, and this specifies the size of yacht you are able to work on.  The training covers all aspects of the safe operation of superyachts, including:

  • Navigation and Radar
  • Collision Regulations
  • Operational Safety
  • Responses to emergencies
  • Pollution control
  • Business and Law
  • Stability
  • Medical Care

These are the top-level deck qualifications in the industry and completion is spread over a number of years.  They are designed to be achieved while working on board.  The modular design allows the training elements and exams to be taken while on leave.
