Destination UK
Superyacht UK (SYUK), in association with UK Trade and
Investment (UKTI), held their Destination UK Conference at
Lancaster House on the 15th March. A new initiative
designed to promote the UK’s cruising grounds to visiting
Superyachts in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics and the legacy
years. The day was focussed on making it as easy as possible for
Superyachts to visit the UK.
The event kicked off with a welcome dinner at
the Royal Thames Yacht Club for visiting Yacht Captains, Charter
and Fleet Managers on Monday 14th March, along with a
group of invited VIP’s and SYUK staff. The next day the conference
took place at Lancaster House in London which provided an
impressive backdrop for the day’s activities.
A morning conference, facilitated by SYUK’s Tom Chant
presented the vast opportunities on offer to visiting yachts in
2012 and beyond. The presentations were given by the key cruising
grounds in the UK including the South West, South East, and
Scotland. London and Weymouth added extra detail about the activity
in their region pertinent to the 2012 Olympic Games
A networking Lunch then followed before an
afternoon panel discussion on the UK’s Regatta circuit in 2012
including the Westward Cup, J Class Regatta’s and the Superyacht
Cup, Cowes. A closing speech from Mark Prisk MP, the Minister of
State for Business and Enterprise, ended the conference
highlighting the importance of the UK’s Superyacht Sector in the
lead up to the Olympic Games in London. Attendees finished the day
with a valued afternoon’s networking.
Tim Wiltshire, Sales Director at
Burgess and Chairman of SYUK
"The Destination UK event hosted by SYUK and
UKTI at the prestigious Lancaster House on the Mall has proved an
enormous success and really highlighted the potential of the UK for
visiting superyachts, particularly for the Olympic year and during
the games. It was great to see the enthusiasm from both the
industry and also from government and we hope that the links
created will inspire and encourage owners as well as show their
captains, charter and management teams what fantastic destinations
and facilities are available to them in London and in the rest of
the UK."
Liz Whitman, Marketing Director at Oyster
"The Superyacht UK - Destination UK
event, held in the really magnificent venue of Lancaster House, was
a great opportunity for Oyster to find out about facilities for our
owners wishing to visit the UK for the Olympic Games and to meet
representatives from both the London and Weymouth operations. With
our own 2012 Regatta for Oyster owners at the Royal Yacht Squadron
in Cowes from 9-14 July, we are already getting interest from some
of our overseas owners wanting to bring their yachts to the UK and
are doing all we can to promote the Olympics to our
customers."
Jim Thom, Captain of SY
Mariquita
"Above all the Destination UK event at
Lancaster House demonstrates the enormous potential the UK
marine business sector offers, and is poised to deliver in 2012.
Yachts visiting Britain in this Olympic year will find world
class facilities, top flight service and memorable cruising
destinations"
Martin Hall, Olympic Legacy
Unit, UK Trade & Investment
"UK Trade & Investment recognise the
incredible opportunity the London Olympic and Paralympic Games
offers the UK to showcase itself as a place with which and in which
to do business. As the government organisation tasked with
delivering the international economic legacy, UKTI are working hard
to boost UK exports and attract extra Foreign Direct
Investment because of the raised profile of the UK because of the
games. Our British Business Embassy programme at
Lancaster House will allow the numerous international and UK
companies visiting the games the perfect opportunity to network,
partner and ultimately do business."
