A crew engagement programme was launched at the Monaco Yacht Show by Superyacht UK - an Association supporting Superyacht businesses in the UK. The Association, has recognised that there is an increasing demand for Crew to work on ships around the globe and aims to support those in the profession and raise the profile of the sector to encourage new recruits.
The tremendous growth experienced by the Superyacht industry, estimated at 500% in the past 10 years, has created a worldwide shortage of trained and qualified crew, both on deck and in engineering occupations. Experts are estimating that 435 yachts of more than 30 metres will be launched in 2007, in addition to a number of 100 metres plus, creating a further huge demand.
Through the Superyacht UK website, www.superyachtuk.com , and other means, Superyacht UK aims to support Crew members, and raise the profile of the sector. The Crew section of the website was launched at the Monaco Yacht Show and will grow with more information about the industry. Feedback from Superyacht Crew will assist in developing the site.
Sarah Dhanda, Director of Training at British Marine Federation said: "The tremendous growth in the Superyacht sector is great news for the industry but we now must address the demand for crew. The Crew Engagement programme is a great initiative from Superyacht UK and will serve many purposes, from providing support to raising the profile of the sector and encouraging new entrants."
