“Marine Conservation Research International is a unique not-for-profit organisation conducting practical conservation projects on vulnerable marine wildlife and habitats. The team has particular expertise in the study of cetaceans and investigating human impacts, such as underwater noise, disturbance and marine debris, as well as in training and awareness raising. MCR have worked with a wide range of collaborators and partners including governments, intergovernmental agreements, NGOs and academic institutions in over 25 different countries. The team have developed specialised techniques, software and equipment that they have used for the study of various threatened marine species around the world, including sperm whales, beaked whales, north Atlantic right whales, basking sharks and monk seals. Many of the techniques developed by the team are now used by other research groups worldwide. The team’s purpose-built commercially registered sailing research vessel, R/V Song of the Whale, is recognised one of the quietest marine research vessels in the world;  R/V Song of the Whale operates with minimal disturbance to marine life and is largely free of self-noise when undertaking acoustic surveys.

The team on Song of the Whale has been studying marine mammals since 1987, and the data collected on the behaviour, and the presence, distribution and abundance of animals has been used in a wide range of applications, from informing the designation of protected areas, providing baseline data in previously unstudied areas, contributing to studies of the movements and population biology of little know species, and reducing threats from human activities such as collisions with ships, and underwater noise pollution.”
