Competition Brief

We are looking for the students to draw a "conceptual exterior sketch and general arrangement (GA)" plan that captures the essence of what a client is looking for."  The brief will not be given until the morning of Wednesday 10th January, however an example brief will be given beforehand.

Peter Brown of Burgess Yachts, who will be one of the judges, commented, "The UK remains a global hub for superyacht design and Superyacht UK are keen to help nurture the next generation of home grown design talent. The core skill of hand sketching is increasingly rare and is often dismissed in favour of software generated design work, and so the challenge for young designers becomes one of differentiating themselves from much of the competition by employing a more traditional skillset when the situation demands it.”

The Judges

The judging panel consists of some of the world’s top designers and industry professionals including:

Justin Olesinski - Olesinski Ltd

Peter Brown - Burgess

Tony Dixon - Redman Whiteley Dixon

Dimitris Hadjidimos - D-iD Limited

Stephen Hill - Pendennis Shipyard Ltd

Christopher Karam, a student from Staffordshire University, scooped the top prize at the UK Young Designer Competition 2017, in partnership with Southampton Solent University. Held at the London Boat Show, the presentation was made by Tracey Crouch MP, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Heritage.

The winner, Christopher Karam, who is studying Transport Design at Staffordshire University, commented: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have won this prestigious award and be crowned 2017’s Superyacht UK Young Designer. I am really proud of my design which incorporated all the elements of the brief including a heli-pad, a slider for two tenders and some cool activities to entertain children. My dream is to work in transport design when I complete my course and I feel sure my prize of a four-week internship at Pendennis Shipyard will provide me with some fantastic experience for my future.”
