Many owners of sailing yachts would like to install a watermaker, but have been put off in the past by concerns over power and space requirements. Now Seafresh Desalinators are launching a DC powered energy recovery desalinator which measures just 70(l) x 35(w) x 25cm(h), weighs only 20kg and is so quiet that it is barely discernible over the sound of lapping water. Even better, it can be run from the yacht’s battery supply.

The Seafresh Ocean Whisper, to be launched at the Southampton Boat Show (Stand G030, Ocean Hall), has some of the latest energy recovery technology. This is combined with 30 years of Seafresh experience in the design and manufacture of reverse osmosis desalinators.

“These watermakers can easily be run from a DC battery supply, so the barrier to making fresh water at sea has been removed for the smaller yacht owner. Even larger yacht owners will enjoy the very low noise levels whilst at anchor,” said Chris Bell, general manager of Seafresh.

The Seafresh Ocean Whisper units will be available in three models with capacities of 30, 60 and 90 litres per hour, enough for the drinking and cleaning requirements of most yachts. All the models can be manual or fully automatic.

The new units use the same principles of reverse osmosis which are successfully employed on much larger craft to produce potable water. The breakthrough has been in the use of a patented highly efficient energy recovery system which enables osmotic pressure to be reached at the membranes using a fraction of the power demanded by traditional piston pumps.

The feed pump is the only power consuming item and supplies the energy recovery unit with a constant supply of seawater at a relatively low pressure, around 150psi (10 BAR). The energy recovery unit them amplifies this pressure using a combination of valves and pistons, raising it to 800 psi when reverse osmosis takes place. Pressure from the brine exit of the pressure vessel is returned to the energy recovery device to assist in the next pressure cycle.

As the system only requires low pressure to begin the cycle, it lends itself to DC operation with the feed pump on a typical 30 litre unit only consuming around 13 amps per hour at 12V DC. This is very low compared to a traditional piston pump system which can consume more than 35 amps at 12V DC to produce the same amount of fresh water.

“The beauty of this system is that yachtsmen can have an endless supply of fresh water using battery power which can be replenished using wind or solar power generation. It gives a great sense of self sufficiency and freedom,” Chris Bell commented.

The Seafresh Ocean Whisper is the latest addition to a range which includes the ‘H20’ series with outputs up to 276 litres per hour and the ‘Ton’ series for megayachts with capacities of up to 25 cubic metres per day.

Seafresh Desalinators are part of Cathelco Ltd, the world leading suppliers of seawater pipework anti-fouling systems and ICCP hull corrosion protection systems for yachts. Customers are supported by a network of over 50 agent/installers worldwide.
