Pendennis Apprentice of the Year Awards
At the end of 2017 Pendennis Shipyard hosted an Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony to celebrate the achievements of its current trainees. Certificates were handed out to 32 apprentices, which included vocational and academic qualifications alongside achievements in RYA and First Aid. At the presentation Pendennis also announced their Apprentices of the Year, who were James Lambourn from Year 1, Amelia Shenton of Year 3, and Sam Donovan who is a Surface Finishing apprentice.
The internationally renowned superyacht company is now looking for the next group of young people to begin a four-year General Apprenticeship in Falmouth this August. This award-winning specialist scheme welcomes around twelve 16-20 year olds each year, and has proved so popular that the company has now increased its intake to be annual rather than every other year.
During their training apprentices will spend their first year at Cornwall College, gaining recognised qualifications, alongside experience in each trade and business area of the superyacht industry. When they move into their second year, apprentices will then specialise in a key trade (joinery, engineering, electrical or fabrication/welding), mentored by highly experienced senior staff.
Named as ‘Apprenticeship Programme of the Year’ by the Times Educational Supplement FE Awards 2017 and winner of the SW ‘Large Employer’ category at this year’s National Apprenticeship Awards, the course provides a dynamic and varied training programme which leads young people into bright careers at Pendennis, with many progressing into senior management roles.
